In his fierce aspects, he is often depicted slaying demons.
Let's see some interesting facts about Mahadev:-
1. Shiva the inventor of martial arts and Dance.
It is believed that Lord Shiva himself developed an art of warfare known as KALARIPAYATTU which was finally learnt by people in South India through his disciples. As lord Nandi is very dear to Lord Shiva and is always with him, so first student of this art of warfare was lord Nandi
Kalaripayattu sometimes known simply as Kalari It is the oldest of all known martial arts forms. Bodhi Dharma, a Buddhist monk who was also an expert in Kalaripayattu spread the art form in China eventually evolvin
2. Shiva destroyer of Kaam Dev.
Lord Shiva took Vairaagya after Sati has been burnt. But at that time, there was a demon Taarakasur, who took a boon from Brahma that only Shiva’s son can kill him.
So, when Parvati was praising Shiva to marry him, shiva was not responding. To create the feeling of attraction to the family and the world, Devas asked Kamadeva to do something on Shiva.
Then Kamadev, left 5 Pushpa Baan (Flowered Arrows) on shiva to make him awake from the Samadhi.
Shiva became angry and burnt Kamadev from his third eye… And the whole world lost the feeling of attraction from each other.
In the last, his wife Rati, praised Lord shiva and asked a boon from him that Kamadev will take rebirth in the form of Krishna’s son in Dwapara Yuga.
3. Shiva's Vashuki (the snake).
The snake represents the Ahamkara (ego). ... The Lord monitors the Ahamkara or the ego that otherwise makes us hollow from within. Shiva is also known as Bairagi (or Vairagi), meaning he is above the mundane world. He doesn't fear anything as he is above all emotions.
4. Shiv's 3 lines of ashes on his forehead.
The three lines on a Shivling indicates the three ‘gunas’- Rajas, Satva and Tamas. These gunas are present in all human beings in more or less quantity. According to Yajurveda Lord Shiva is Nirguna “Na Tasya Pratima Asti”, i.e he is formless and is unaffected by either of the three gunas. The three lines are symbolic of Lord Shiva’s balance and divinity.
5. Shiva cut down the head of Lord Brahma and gives him curse!!
Hindu mythology uses her story to explain Brahma’s four heads. When Brahma created Shatarupa, he was immediately infatuated and pursued her wherever she went. Shatarupā moved in various directions to avoid his gaze but wherever she went, Brahmā developed another head until he had four, one for each direction of the compass. Desperate, Shatarupa leaped over him to stay out of his gaze even for a
moment. A fifth head, however, appeared above the others. Thus, Brahmā developed five heads. At this moment Shiva appeared, cut off the top head and determined that since Shatarupā was Brahma’s daughter (being created by him), it was wrong and incestuous of Brahma to become obsessed with her. He directed that there be no
proper worship in India for the “unholy” Brahma. Thus, only the other two Gods of the Trimurti, Vishnu and Shiva continue to be worshipped, while Brahma is almost totally ignored. Ever since the incident, Brahma has been reciting the four Vedas, one from every mouth, in his attempt at repentance.
The most fascinating fact everyone should know:-
#Why Shiva is not worshiped with turmeric (Haldi)?
Even though it is considered a highly sacred element for all religious purposes and is used in the rituals of worshiping all Gods and Goddess, however, Haldi is never offered to Lord Shiva or his Shivlinga.
According to the scriptures, Shivlingam is a representation of a male yoni, particularly Lord Shiva’s, which is widely revered for its manifestation of his enormous energy. For this reason, it is always worshiped with elements that are endowed with cooling properties like milk, sandalwood, bhasma, etc.
However, turmeric is related to inducing feminine beauty. And Lord Shiva, who had always stayed away from worldly pleasures and lived off as celibate is never worshiped with Haldi.
